Scope of Work: Provide Project Management assistance and Subject Matter Expertise to the Mad Dog 2 Project Team for the installation of a subsea fiber optic connection for the new Argos semisubmersible offshore platform. Three year project assignment.

Details: The BP Mad Dog 2 Project is a greenfield development project that added the Argos offshore Floating Production Unit (FPU) to the Mad Dog field, which is located in the Green Canyon area of the Gulf of Mexico. As part of this overall project, the Argos platform would require a subsea fiber optic branch leg connecting it to the existing GoM Fiber Optic Network for all of its voice and data communications requirements. The Project Group Consulting LLC provided personnel to support this project which culminated in the installation of over 14 km of fiber optic cable on the seafloor from the BP Mad Dog 2 Drill Center DC-1 to a pre-installed Branching Unit tie-in point located approximately 8 km North of the BP Argos deepwater oil & gas FPU platform.

The Optical Flying Lead (OFL) will be installed in early 2022 connecting the fiber branch leg to the DC-1 umbilical, thereby completing the connectivity between the Argos platform and the Fiber Network. providing reliable high-speed data and communications capability to the facility.

The Project Group Consulting’s overall scope of work consisted of:

  • Engineering and Planning; Oversee design efforts, generate project related procedural documentation, coordinate Regulatory and Permitting requirements, review contractor engineering and design documentation. Review overall schedule and deadline requirements, monitor contractor performance. Review subsea cable route and approve final configuration. Coordinate with the subsea and pipeline teams for all inter-related activities and pipeline crossings. Perform Marine Assurance and Vessel Assurance activities to meet client requirements for both Main Lay Vessel and Support (ROV) Vessel.
  • Manufacturing; Oversight of contractor manufacturing for all equipment and materials to be supplied. Conduct design review meetings, review and approval of manufacturing processes, testing, and reports. Confirm all as-built documentation and Manufacturers Data Books. Coordinate all equipment spares for client use.

Installation and Commissioning: Coordinate and oversee the installation of contractor equipment and materials onboard the Argos FPU while in the fabrication yard in South Korea. Work with the topsides design team to ensure all interfaces meet the project requirements. Work with client and contractor Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) teams to perform Risk Assessments and meet HSE requirements. Manage the interface between the project team and client Operations and Maintenance personnel for all support needs. Oversee the offshore Marine Installation Campaign and act as Client Vessel Representative onboard the Main Lay Vessel.
